The Need for a Healthy Lifestyle
Obesity is increasing at an alarming rate in Pennsylvania. According to the
2001 Pennsylvania Department of Health's Pennsylvania Nutrition and Physical
Activity Plan, over 60 percent of Pennsylvania adults and 18 percent of Pennsylvania
youth were overweight. Obesity increases the risk of hypertension, diabetes,
sleep-disordered breathing and cardiovascular mortality. This has a significant
impact on our economy with soaring health care costs and increased sick leave.
Now is the time to provide your employees with the information and activities
to help them make some changes in their lifestyle in order to conquer this ever-growing
challenge.
Healthy Lifestyle Program
Your company can offer its employees access to a healthy lifestyle by selecting
to have a Healthy Lifestyle Program onsite. The program is administered through
the Partnership Transportation Management Association (PTMA) in co-operation with
the North Penn Visiting Nurses Association (NPVNA). The Healthy Lifestyle Program
can include one or all of the following:
- Set up and maintain a Healthy Lifestyle Center which provides information
on exercise alternatives such as biking and walking, nutrition, exercise and alternative
forms of transportation
- Organize Bike or Walk-to-Work days
- Establish and provide information for an employee walking club
- Coordinate a healthy lifestyle fair
- Provide access to a speakers' bureau on healthy lifestyles
Partnerships for a Healthier Life
The PTMA, in existence since 1993, is a nonprofit organization with a mission
to increase mobility, improve access to work, establish the link between land
use and transportation and inform and educate individuals on the benefits of alternative
forms of transportation.
The North Penn Visiting Nurses Association's Department of Community Health
Education Programs has been providing health care screenings, health care support
groups, school programs, senior programs, lectures and immunizations for years
to the North Penn community.
Both organizations are now working together to bring you a complete healthy
lifestyle program.
If you are interested in participation in conquering these growing challenges,
call the PTMA at 215.699.2733 or email
